Big Bad Con 2017

Created by Sean Nittner

Big Bad Con is a tabletop and live action gaming convention for teens and adults happening October 13-15, 2017 in the California Bay Area. We're a completely volunteer-run non-profit and wouldn’t exist without our passionate volunteers, players, talented game-masters and game designers.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

over 6 years ago – Sat, Sep 09, 2017 at 03:11:09 PM

Big Bad Con games are approaching. Signal's clean. Range, twenty meters.

Fifteen meters… Game schedule is now live!

This is a big signal! There are so many games!

Twelve meters… Verify your badge now!

They're right on us! Almost here! Sign ups start September 16th at noon (PST)!

Remember, short controlled bursts! You can only register for two games during the first week of registration

Nine meters. Seven. Six… That can't be! That's inside the room! ————————————————————————

Thank you Big Bad Con Sponsors

We are so excited to open games registration. There is such an amazing list of games and events this year. We want to thank all of our donors for supporting our kickstarter. We also want to thank this year’s generous sponsors Bully Pulpit Games and Evil Hat for helping support Big Bad Con 2017!

Game Schedule Live Now!

The game schedule is now live and game registration opens at noon (pst) on September 16th!  You can also get a visual of the entire game schedules here:

Make sure to register your badge before registration begins! During the first week of game registration you are limited to signing up for only 2 games. On Sept 23rd this opens up to 4 games and Sept 30th it opens up fully with no maximum.

In years past, we have sometimes had issues with the game registration due to the horde of everyone trying to register at the same time. We think we have fixed most of the issues on the backend but please bare with us if you run into trouble. You can follow us for any updates on twitter: @bigbadcon.

Reopening Game Submissions!

We have a few open game slots so we are reopening game submissions! Got an idea for a game but missed the deadline? Sign up to run a game now! Don’t have a game to submit but want to help Big Bad Con happen? Then sign up to volunteer as a member of the Wolf Pack!

Don your Wizards Robes for New World Magiscola!

The wondrous magical college of New World Magiscola is coming to Big Bad Con! There will be multiple runs of their new card game New World Magischola House Rivalry — which will be Kickstarting on Sept 18th! And a run of their LARP, A Wolf By Any Other Name — Wands and wizard robes provided!

Hi all,

Just a few updates as we're getting closer to the con.

Event submissions open till Saturday, Aug 26

We have just a few more days until event submissions close, so if you've got a game, panel, or special event, head over to submit an event!

BackerKit closing soon

We're about to close BackerKit and charge cards for any add-ons. We've still got a few folks who haven't completed their surveys yet. If you haven't done so already, head over to https://big-bad-con-2017.backerkit.com/.

Outreach event for the teens at University Village

On September 29 we'll be running the first Big Bad Con outreach event, running games at University Village at Albany. We're excited to run games for the teens there and hope a few of them can make it out to the con!

Big Bad Online with Stras Acimovic

Stras and friends will be playing a game of Atlas Reckoning on twitch.tv/actualplay on September 14 at 6PM PST.

The Wolf and Little Red have a new look

Thanks to Eden Parkison for her amazing work giving us a a new rendition of our mascots!

Scholarship Rewards

We're please to announce that thanks to you, we'll be offering scholarships to six attendees! I'm so excited that every year since the inception of the fund, we're raised more money and been able to offer more support to bring folks to the con!

Also, we've set aside a little bit of the scholarship fund for our outreach teens. If any of them want to attend the con, we're all set to make sure they can!

Special guest Eva Wei and A Week in SF
over 6 years ago – Thu, Aug 03, 2017 at 11:57:37 PM

I've got two announcements I'm really excited about. We've been working on both of these since before the Kickstarter launched and now they're coming into focus!

Eva Wei coming to Big Bad Con

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Luke Crane and Burning Wheel HQ, we'll be bringing Eva Wei to come play games with us!

Eva is a wonderfully creative Swedish larpwright, IP-lawyer and lecturer. She is known for her close-knit larps about current subjects and her work for equality. When not larping, she practices historical European martial arts, plays and designs escape rooms, and has an great interest in disc jockeying.

Eva Wei will be running these games at Big Bad Con:

  • How to Be Ava White (Game 1, Game 2) — Players take the role of a facet of Ava’s persona trying to manage unrealistic expectations society has placed upon her as a woman. How to Be Ava White was published in #Feminism: A Collection of Nano-Games.
  • Beyond the Barricades — It is 1832 and the time for change is now. The riot is all around you. The people of Paris are rising up to fight by your side. You and your friends have finally made it. Onwards to the barricades. Long live the revolution!

A Week in SF: Sign ups open now

Secondly, the wonderful organizers of A Week in SF (J, Hakan, Randy, Avital, James, Kathryn, and Peter) have made a preliminary schedule of events for the Tuesday-Thursday before Big Bad Con!

If you're in town any of those days and want to explore the city, play pinball, go to museums, socialize, and play games, check out these events:

  • Tuesday Pinball and classic arcade games at Coin-Op! Casual open gaming at Home Base!
  • Wednesday — Sutro Baths and Camera Obscura! The Interval at Long Now! Dinner in China Town! Escape Room! And more open gaming at Home Base!
  • Thursday — Mission Walkabout! Golden Gate Park and Museums! And more open gaming at Home Base!

Important note: if you've completed your BackerKit survey and have a badge, you can sign up to be a part of a Week in SF now! If you haven't completed the survey, head over to big-bad-con-2017.backerkit.com to fill it out!

More news

I'm meeting with the University Village at Albany next week to start planning Outreach events there. We want to bring the UVA teens great games and hopefully bring some of them to the con as well!

We've got tons of events posted already and we're looking for more! Interested in running a game, hosting a panel, or putting on a special event? Submit them here!

The first Big Bad Online game with Steven Lumpkin was played on July 24th. Here's the video of the game!

Big Bad Con is, as ever, shaping up to be the best part of my year. So excited to see you there!

BackerKit surveys are coming!
almost 7 years ago – Thu, Jul 13, 2017 at 09:22:51 PM

Soon, you’ll receive an email from us with a special link to your BackerKit survey. It’s important to respond to your survey as quickly as you can since we need this information to fulfill your rewards.

When you receive the email with the survey, click the survey link to respond. Answer the questions about your reward preferences, provide Big Bad Con account information, and purchase add-on items if you like. You don’t have access to this survey link yet, but it will be available soon via email!

Important Note: If you pledged extra to include additional rewards (like badges or Little Red's baskets) you'll add those as BackerKit add ons using the credit on your account.

After you respond to your survey, you can go back later and change your responses at any time before we close the surveys and get our final counts.

If you need to review your information or pledge status, you can return to your survey by clicking the link in your survey email or requesting your survey link under "Lost your survey?" on our BackerKit project page at https://big-bad-con-2017.backerkit.com.

If you used your Facebook credentials to log in to your Kickstarter account, the BackerKit survey is sent to the email address you use for your Facebook account. If you have another email address that you prefer to use, please contact support at https://big-bad-con-2017.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us

See you at the con!

Success!
almost 7 years ago – Thu, Jun 22, 2017 at 08:40:14 PM

Huzzah!

Big Bad Con 2017 is going to be amazing and it's all because of your support! I cannot say thank you enough!

What's next?

Now we start the logistics of wrapping up the campaign and making the con happen: setting up BackerKit, filling our roster of awesome games and events, arranging transportation and hotel rooms for stretch goal guests, working on our mobile app, and all the other big and little things that go into making Big Bad Con happen!

We may run quiet for a while, but rest assured, that's just because we're focused on the work at hand. If you have any questions about the convention, outreach program, or Kickstarter, please let us know (either by sending a direct message here, or emailing [email protected]).

What to expect between now and October

June and July

We'll be sending out BackerKit surveys to collect all of your particulars like your account and badge info for the con, dietary restrictions for Little Red's Basket, your address for Baba Yaga's Gift Box, and your available times to play Big Bad Online.

Also, If you're interested in participating more at the con, we still have openings for GMs and volunteer staff. Click over to our website to submit an event or join the wolf pack!

August

In mid-August, we'll publish the event schedule so you can see when your favorite games, seminars, and workshops are happening. Submissions are already being posted on our website as they roll in!

The deadline for scholarship applications is August 15, so if you know someone who could benefit from the program, please send them here to apply

September

In early to mid-September, we'll open game registration (don't worry, we'll give plenty of advance notice before registration goes live). Check out our website for more info about our signup phase system.

See you at the con!

To everyone who can make it out this year, I'm so excited to see you. The very best part of Big Bad Con is the people involved, so if we don't know each other already, please feel free to introduce yourself to me or any of the convention staff and volunteers. We're eager to game with you!
